The Polish State survived underground. Its legitimate leaders – the President, the Government and the Army’s Commander-in-Chief – were based in London. Assuming the rank of Deputy Prime Minister, a delegate from the government-in-exile in the country exercised the highest power over the territory of occupied Poland. He secretly led the civil administration.
The Polish Underground State not only organised the resistance against occupation authorities, but also looked after the Polish population, supported secret schools and organised information, cultural and documentation activities.
Underground soldiers trained each other, carried out sabotage and reconnaissance activities and prepared an armed national uprising.
